MEDITATION THE ESSENCE OF JAINISM

Date : 2005-03-31

The inner overcomes the outer. We can not remove outward evils without inner transformation. Violence is an effect, an outward manifestation. So are anger and all other evils. We want to do away with results, without understanding the causes. As long cause is there the effect is bound to be there. Meditation is an experimental method of removing all the causes as well as self realization or getting Nibbanic peace.

All the Tirthankaras statues are in the state of meditation that shows the importance of meditation. Of course Dhamma & Meditation are the two sides of the same coin.

Aayaro is the oldest Aagam of Jainism .It says one who always knows the reality of body every moment without goofing is practicing meditation. In meditation one observes the body, the ebb and flow occurring in the body. To know the fact of craving and abortions were it is occurring and trying to stay away with it is the path of meditation.

Jain’s texts are based on meditation. Jain has lost that text which had the method of meditation and that was “Dristiwad”. Meditation is to experience within oneself “as it is” and not as appears to be or not as seems to be. Meditation is the technology of individual transcendence of sufferings.

Vipassana is one of the techniques of meditations. Although this technique is in the tradition of Lord Buddha, but it teaches thyself to remain apart from clinging & hatred i.e. Raga & Dvesh and to get liberated from all Karmas/bondages through Samyak Darshan to see thyself Samyak Gyan to know thyself Samyak Charitra to be with thyself. This is the path of Jainism taught by Lord Mahavira. Lord Mahavira also teaches about awareness and equanimity. Vipassana shows the path of awareness and equanimity.

Jain texts describe particularly removal of Rag Dvesh (clinging hatred), keeping Samta (equanimity) and awareness. Jain and Buddha’s have the concept of Loka in the same meaning. Lokas has both ways individual as well as universal. Vipassana can be done in Loka of individual and it is beneficial to individual as well as universal. Jain texts, too speak not of mere outward change, but deep inner transformation. The individual can feel the same and no amount of lectures can give it real intake. Therefore the Vipassana meditation centres invite you to experience Vipassana directly at a ten days course
